RPGs and the Missing Link

When it comes to video games, any gamer who has dipped their foot in the waters knows that games are divided into genres. We've established these rules that define all of our games, placing them in their proper places. But who decides? Personally, there is one classification I disagree with- listing Zelda as an Action Adventure, rather than an Action RPG.

When I asked around, most people said that they consider the Zelda series an RPG. However, Nintendo considers it an action adventure game. Why? Perhaps because Zelda lacks in the traditional leveling system. Combat is not based on any complex equation, other than how many hits an enemy takes with what type of weapon. Link's character has no well-defined personality and little in the way of any real background. However, the game possesses a storyline and there is still the adoption of a role, so where in lay the difference between such games as Zelda and what would be defined as a role playing game? Most video games include the adoption of a role though not all are considered role playing games. Role playing games as a genre include a few things, but the most common theme over all the various subgenres is character development. RPGs have a foundation consisting of statistics, levels, and the advancement of the character.

So when does a game stop being an RPG? Honestly, it's hard to say. The genre has acquired so many subsections that it now spans the majority of styles. Still, when someone says that they like role playing games to me, I immediately think on the turn-based style, like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Suikoden. If the RPG genre can include games that take on the third person or even first person action aspects, then why shouldn't Zelda be counted amongst this number? Your character develops through the acquisition of not only new weapons, but heart pieces and armors. In my opinion all of these are crucial aspects of an RPG. While it isn't the standard experience and level system and you don't get a party of characters, you still get the same feeling of playing a character through an epic tale.

What is an RPG? The technical definition of a role playing game is "A game in which players take on the roles of imaginary characters." To the gamer, we can say that a role playing game is a game in which your character has some development and where you interact in a storyline. To some, these games have to have statistics and an equation based calculation of damage. I think that the heart of the role playing game is an immersive story, a strong empathy with the character of the story, interaction with other characters or NPCs and the ability to have that character grow based on your actions. Under that definition, while maybe the first Zelda wouldn't exactly be a role playing game, the series is one that fulfills those obligations through longevity. It has generated a fan base of fervently loyal players who have time and again taken on the role of Link to rescue Princess Zelda. While much of Link is not known, almost all players feel a connection to the green clad hero. That definitely qualifies under a role playing game in my book.

Dungeons Need Defending

This might sound outrageously biased but Dungeon Defenders is a game I'm really looking forward too.  I am a huge sucker for simple easy to play action-rpg's, one of my favorite games of all time was Gauntlet Legends on the PS2.  Another great one that comes to mind is Castle Crashers on PSN and Xbox Live.  I don't know how much rpg was in those games compared to action but they had the leveling up and skill/weapon libraries that keep me playing for countless hours.  Dungeon Defenders looks like its going to offer that same easy going, button mashing, loot hording craziness, all while incorporating another concept, tower defense.

Dungeon Defenders will feature four distinct hero classes, each with there own set of weapons and abilities.  The loot will be ample and the gear up-gradable.  You can also expect to acquire your own "familiar's", these little guys can supposedly be leveled up and customized and even traded with other players.  The role of the player will be defending there castle from hordes of monsters and bosses. You will have the ability to summon traps and other defenses. Not just a strategy game though, the player will actually participate in the battles using spells and melee to send those mobs packing.

I will also admit I am a huge sucker for cartoons and games that celebrate that cartoon style of artwork.  Dungeon Defenders does not disappoint in that aspect.  The style looks fun and kid friendly while still being rich enough to keep the older gamer involved.  The expressive water-color style cartoon graphics also allows the game to be run on a wide range of computers.

The game will also feature a large variety in levels.  Each with there own settings, monster types, and scripted surprises for the player.  There will be story-book style cinematic's for the campaign mode and each class will have its own ending.  With four different levels of difficulty ranging from novice to master each with there own levels of loot and experience points it also looks to have promising replay value.   There will also be a strong emphasis on stats for the players to go over and examine, from graphs to hit/miss ratio's every detail is logged for you to analyze.  The game will also feature multiple modes of play.  There will be a pvp mode and "Challenge" mode which allows players to play any level with unique rule sets and goals.

Overall the game looks like its going to be a really fun and addicting take on the action-rpg genre.  I can't wait to start nuking all the hordes of monsters and gathering my "loot"!  Dungeon Defenders has been out on the mobile market for over a year now but the will be joining the console and pc platforms soon.  It will also feature the ability to play with people using mobile devices online.  Dungeon Defenders is set to release on Oct 19th for the Xbox Live Arcade and for Windows PC.  A PSN release has yet to be determined.

Earthbound Complete Walkthrough

A meteorite crashes near the peaceful town of Onett, and a young boy's life is changed forever in Nintendo's role playing game, Earthbound. Earthbound is different, though, than the average sword-wielding RPG. In what other game can you defeat enemies with a frying pan, call a pizza-delivery man, or ask your dad for money? Need to get some cash? Just jog on down to the local ATM and withdraw some money for that great Yo-yo you saw at the drugstore. Earthbound uses a party-based fighting format, and you pick up new members as you explore both your world and others. Earthbound is irreverent, a little silly, and a must have cultural hit of an RPG.

The complete walkthrough of Earthbound, as always all gaming, no BS, pure gameplay.

REVIEW: Elemental: War of Magic

Elemental: War of Magic is an interesting strategy game that I picked up on late though have found myself greatly enjoying. The first thing that struck me about the game was the creative freedom one has. You are able to design your own factions, your own worlds, and your own units and heroes. It is definitely a game for those with a tendency to build their own stories in their mind while hammering their enemies into the ground with powerful soldiers. Hit read more and I'll go into some details.

REVIEW - Fallout: New Vegas

Fallout: New Vegas is the most recent Fallout title from Bethesda.  It’s a sandbox role playing game using the same engine as Fallout 3.  It is set in the wastelands of Las Vegas, Nevada and the surrounding desert.  Traveling from destination to destination determining how to handle whatever is put in front of you.   You are free to take the path of a saint and help every poor wastelander that you come across or you can simply shoot them, take their stuff, and continue on your path of terror.   You come across drug addicts, poor refugees, various "tribes" and the all the other things you would expect from recent Fallout title like super mutants, ghouls, and mutated wild life.

REVIEW: Shenmue II for the Dreamcast

Sega's Dreamcast has been the home to more than a handful of truly unique gaming experiences, those that you could say either define or help define the genre they're apart of. Shenmue II is one of those games. From the moment you power on the console with the game disc inserted, to the sign that the game has ultimately been concluded (the credits), Shenmue II manages to provide gamers with one of the truly most breathtaking and awe-struck masterpieces in the history of video games.
